Moving Healthcare

Moving Healthcare Professionals is a national programme, led by the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) and Sport England which supports healthcare professionals to improve their knowledge and skills around the benefits of physical activity and allows them to embed physical activity in routine care to improve patient outcomes.

Healthcare professionals play a vital role in helping the nation to increase activity and strive for the targets outlined in the national physical activity framework, Everybody Active Every Day and the Chief Medical Officers Physical Activity Guidelines.

The Moving Healthcare Professionals programme was established in 2017 and was designed to:

  • Provide evidence-based training and support resources for healthcare professionals to improve awareness, knowledge, confidence and skills to promote physical activity to patients to prevent and manage ill health.
  • Test how to best embed physical activity within clinical practice so that physical activity conversations, signposting and prescribing become part of normal NHS clinical practice.
  • Support the management of patients with long-term conditions, including people with diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.
  • Help reduce long-term demand and costs on the NHS.

As part of the programme, healthcare professionals can enrol in a peer-led training course delivered by a regional physical activity clinical champion. The training embeds understanding and empowers professionals to use the power of physical activity to help their patients.

As a key partner of the physical activity clinical champions programme, Living Sport deliver a presentation during the training, signposting to local offers, programmes and exit routes for physical activity around Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
