Walks for Mindfulness

About the project

The number of residents in South Cambridgeshire with a recognised mental health condition is increasing. This is having an impact on health services, and has been identified in the health strategy as a priority area.

There is a growing evidence base showing how physical activity can contribute to improving mental wellbeing and as such Leah Collis, the district co-ordinator for Let’s Get Moving Cambridgeshire, decided to run a series of ‘Mindfulness in Nature Walks’.

What changed?

Let’s Get Moving Cambridgeshire developed the session through helping to identify the venue and supported with promotion of the sessions through social media. Data collection and evaluation of this data was also guided by The Lets Get Moving Cambridgeshire evaluation framework. Funding was very generously accessed through the A14 community fund, which is delivered by the Cambridgeshire Community Foundation.

The difference

Carolyn Pallon, the walk leader said: “It’s been a real joy delivering Mindfulness sessions outdoors in Milton Country Park with Let’s Get Moving. Leah managed to attract a diverse audience, including all ages, those in work, retired, young mothers, grandmothers too. Lets Get Moving had the capacity and skills to advertise and promote, something that’s not a skill of mine, which freed me to concentrate just on the teaching, the part I love.”

The sessions were very well received by participants: “I found the sessions helped me to both unwind and be more aware of my posture and negative thoughts.” This greater awareness had an obvious effect on their day today lives: “My sleep pattern has improved as a result” and “I felt more relaxed for the rest of the day”.

This partnership work is at the heart of Living Sport’s vision of inspiring active lifestyles and improving the health and wellbeing of residents in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough through physical activity, as Carolyn identified: “This kind of partnership is priceless, it means needs around the promotion of wellbeing, prevention and aspects of early intervention can be met, in an incredibly cost-effective way”.
