The Active Mile Summer Reading Challenge

The Active Mile is an initiative that enables children of all ages and abilities to enjoy being physically active every day in schools and early years settings. It’s simple and easy to embed in everyday learning to support children’s mental and physical health and wellbeing, and can be done at any time during the school day through running, walking or jogging.

The Summer Reading Challenge, presented by The Reading Agency is delivered in partnership with public libraries and funded by Arts Council England.  The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4-11 to enjoy the benefits of reading for pleasure and involves the ability to gain virtual badges and certificates. For this challenge, Living Sport have created 8 maps for 8 different libraries across East Cambs & Fenland to combine with an Active Mile challenge.

Active Mile Reading Challenge

The ‘Active Mile Summer Reading Challenge’ can be done in conjunction with the Summer Reading Challenge, or separately.

We have created 8 maps for 8 libraries including Ely, Soham, Littleport, Burwell, Whittlesey, Chatteris, Wisbech & March. These maps include a mixture of worldwide sporting events happening across the summer as well as local information for each library with the aim to encourage young people and families to not only keep fit but to explore their local area and try new avenues for physical activity.

The idea of the map route is to start from the library; however, you can start wherever you like and complete your active mile or as many miles as you like in one go.  Make sure you record all of your miles on your activity log on the back of the map! We are encouraging everyone to complete as many of the 12 miles as possible across the summer, of which all participants taking part will receive a certificate, and one person from each library will be picked at random to win a Fitbit.

We are piloting the maps in these areas, but we are hopeful, that we may be able to roll it out to other libraries in the county next year.

We hope everyone has fun completing the Active Mile Summer Reading Challenge and enjoys finding out more about their local area. If anyone needs to get in contact please email kieran.spitzer@livingsport.co.uk or jenny.lambert@livingsport.co.uk
