About the programme
Freedom Leisure, as part of its Active Communities function, in partnership with FACET, a charity with a focus on providing training and day care to adults with disabilities within the Fenland area, has established a bespoke gym and fitness programme for students at The George Campbell Leisure Centre in March.
The difference
The programme provides an opportunity for students to access an affordable local sport and physical activity opportunity whilst also adding a new addition to the current programme at the leisure centre and encouraging inclusivity. At the time of writing, a total of 12 unique students have taken part, with a throughput figure of 29 across the 3 sessions delivered.
Kris Harrold, General Manager at FACET, says “From clear and precise planning between Freedom Leisure and FACET, coupled with a can-do attitude from all the staff at the George Campbell, the gym and fitness programme is truly up and running and being enjoyed by my students that attend. The programme not only enables our students to keep fit but does so in a community environment rather than working within social isolation as is so often the case in the world of learning disabilities”.
Chris Bryden, Active Communities Manager for Freedom Leisure, comments “It’s been absolutely fantastic to work with FACET on this programme and I’m really happy it has gone so well across a short period of time. It’s great that we’ve been able to offer an opportunity such as this to an under-represented group. We have also booked several spaces on the Sense ‘Connecting Differently Through Sport’ workshop in Peterborough to upskill our gym instructors, who are equally as thrilled that the programme has gone so well.”
