Helping More People Discover the Joy of Walking

Living Sport in partnership with the District and City Councils of Cambridgeshire and Vivacity have linked in with the national Ramblers Wellbeing Walks network to create new walking opportunities in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

Many people have found a new love of walking through the pandemic. They are discovering how great it is for health and physical and mental wellbeing.

Living Sport have worked in partnership to organise a range of group walks in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough led by trained volunteer walk leaders. All walks are specially designed to be short (30-90 minutes) and over easy ground, making them ideal for those that have never walked before. Walks are held at different times of day throughout the week. Everyone is welcomed; they are a great way to meet new people and walk in good company, and to give health and wellbeing a boost.

Even a small amount of walking gives health and wellbeing a significant boost for those not currently active, as participant, Joy, found out. Before the pandemic lockdowns, she had not really been out walking, but a neighbour suggested they join a local group walk. They enjoyed meeting new people from their area.

Joy said: “The feeling after the walk is amazing…You just feel it does so much good for me and my mental health. I feel so good after the walk.”

The Ramblers Wellbeing Walks network draws on years of experience. The Ramblers is Britain’s largest walking community – it was founded in 1935 and is dedicated to inspiring everyone to enjoy open skies, fresh air and the feeling of freedom that comes from walking outdoors. They have been organising health walks since 2012 (please see notes to editors for more information).

Michael Firek, at Living sport says, “A warm welcome and lots of inspiration and support awaits those starting their walking adventures with a Ramblers Wellbeing Walk. Walkers will be in good company with the experienced Ramblers Wellbeing Walks leaders and like-minded people. Heading out together along tried-and-tested routes means enjoying, safely, the pleasures of walking together.”

Anyone interested in joining a Ramblers Wellbeing Walk can search for their closest group on the Ramblers website.
