February SEND crash courses at Abbey Leisure Complex

February SEND crash courses at Abbey Leisure Complex

During the February half-term Better (at Abbey Leisure Complex) offered SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) swimming lesson crash courses. The Centre is proud to be running these activities and has developed their offer from half term courses to now run weekly lessons and 1-2-1 lessons.

The project was funded by Living Sport through the Sport England Together Fund. The Together Fund is a continuation of the Tackling Inequalities Fund (TIF) that was set up in April 2020 as part of Sport England’s support package to help the sport and physical activity sector through the coronavirus crisis. The aim of the funding is to tackle the widening inequalities in participation rates in sport and physical activity amongst underrepresented communities.

During the half term they ran courses for 5-8 year olds and 9-15 year olds. The project has enabled 3 crash courses to run during half terms. The feedback received from these lessons was really positive and in turn highlighted from the number of these children that have gone on to book weekly lessons at the Centre.

A parent of a child that attended said “Massive thank you to all of you from Chlo and me! She absolutely loved this week’s crash course! It was so nice to see her happy and engaging (and lovely to meet other parents of SEND children and worrying that she was going to be disruptive)! She’s very excited at the prospect of carrying on lessons”.

The impact of these lessons demonstrates the need for projects such as this in the community to provide opportunities for SEND children and support their families. You can visit the Better website to find out more about sessions they offer.
