On Thursday 23rd March 2023, Living Sport, hosted one of its three Cambridgeshire & Peterborough County School Games events. We were delighted to welcome over 160 young people to St Ivo Indoor Leisure Centre for this year’s Disability and Inclusion Festival.
The event was designed to provide an opportunity for young people to represent their school and district at the Panathlon County Finals after competing in and winning their district competition, along with engaging with young people who are within the mainstream school environment with special educational needs and may not have many opportunities to attend a county event. The event also allowed the young people who attended to develop skills in a range of activities and gain knowledge of where they can access these activities within their local community.
Two primary schools and two secondary schools from each of the five districts (Cambridge, South Cambs, Hunts, Peterborough and Witchford) attended the event which was supported by a range of local deliverers to provide a number of different activities for the students to take part in. The deliverers included; Panathlon Challenge, Hunts FA, Huntingdon Tennis Club and Cricket East and Cambridgeshire. Each of the three local deliverers spoke to the children about how they can access opportunities within their local community to participate in their sport and the inclusive programmes that they are currently running.
Alongside the main festival, 32 children with hearing and visual impairments participated in an engaging Ten-Pin bowling event, using adaptative equipment to help develop motor skills and experience a fun, non-competitive physical activity.
Thirty Young leaders from St Ivo Academy ensured the day ran smoothly by providing excellent support and leadership across all the activities and the Panathlon finals.
The day was a great success, with students enjoying all the activities that were on offer and being rewarded with medals for their participation. Congratulations to all who attended and thank you to our local deliverers for inspiring the young people who attended through planning and delivering such engaging activities.
