Equality and Diversity
We believe everyone, wherever they are and whatever their circumstances, should have the opportunity to participate in sport and physical activity without judgement or prejudice.
Living Sport is committed to promoting equality and diversity in sport and physical activity across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
There are areas within Cambridgeshire and Peterborough where levels of participation is much lower. In our area particularly amongst Older People, Disabled People and those with Long Term Health Conditions, hence the strategic priorities identified in the Living Sport Strategy 2020-2025.
Living Sport has attained the Foundation Level of the Equality Standard: A Framework for Sport. The Standard was established to help address the inequalities that exist within the sports sector and it is a framework to guide sports organisations towards achieving equality. Living Sport is committed to progressing to achievement of the Preliminary Level by the end of 2020.
Equality and Diversity in sport and physical activity is guided and supported by Sport England, the Activity Alliance, Women in Sport, Sport Equals and Pride Sports.
The Equality Standard is guided by The Equality Act 2010 which protects people from discrimination on the basis of ‘protected characteristics’. These protected characteristics are:
- Disability
- Gender reassignment
- Pregnancy and maternity
- Race – this includes ethnic or national origins, colour and nationality
- Religion or belief – this includes lack of belief
- Sex, and sexual orientation
The Act requires sports providers to make reasonable adjustments to services so that everyone has access. The Act replaces previous anti-discrimination laws with a single Act; it simplifies the law, removing inconsistencies and making it easier for people to understand and comply with. It also strengthens the law in important ways to help tackle discrimination and inequality.
